Contemporary Officer’s Quarters

Researcher: Derek Edgar, Grade 12

Officer’s Quarters are found at many other contemporary Fort sites around Ontario. Fort York’s Officer’s Quarters are larger than those of Fort Willow. At Fort York there is a garden outside the Officer’s Quarters and the mess. This was likely used to supply fresh produce to the men.

The Officer’s Quarters at Fort Erie were very comfortable. They were well furnished with the personal posessions of the officers living in them. Since officers were often moved from post to post they often had furniture that was portable. The officers paid for the upkeep of both their quarters and their mess out of pocket. At larger Forts like Fort Erie, the officers had servants who were selected from the standard forces.
